A COMEDY SCENE from the SUPER SMASH-HIT SHA'ABI EGYPTIAN FILM: 'AL LIMBY' with ACTOR: MOHAMED SA'AD[]. The HUMOUR CENTRES around the DIFFERENT SPOKEN LANGUAGES of ARAB COUNTRIES. EGYPTIANS tend to see CINEMA LANGUAGE of EGYPTIAN ARABIC [an easy-speak Arabic, similar in role to American English of Hollywood] as a LINGUA-FRANCA of MIDDLE EAST. However, character, AL LIMBY is WORKING for the FIRST TIME as a BOUNCER with a TUNISIAN BELLY DANCER. The DANCER uses SLANG TUNISIAN ARABIC which is INFLUENCED by ITALIAN COLONIALISM in TUNISIA. TUNISIAN ARABIC is one of the DIALECTS that EGYPTIANS often find DIFFICULT to UNDERSTAND. The TUNISIAN then MOVES to EGYPTIAN ARABIC and FRENCH used in TUNISIA. The UNEDUCATED 'SHAAB' AL LIMBY can't FOLLOW the CONVERSATION and ANSWERS in EGYPTIAN ARABIC and even in FOOSHA FORMAL CLASSICAL ARABIC of SAUDI ARABIA. The WHOLE CONVERSATION is CHAOS of DIFFERENT LOCAL TONGUES of ARABIC that BREAKS a lot of the STEREOTYPES that 'Arabs are all the same', or 'Muslims are all the same". The LINGUISTIC DIFFERENCES between the WIDELY UNDERSTOOD EGYPTIAN ARABIC from CAIRO CINEMA and FOOSHA CLASSICAL of PRINTED ARABIC NEWSPAPERS compared with LESSER KNOWN DISTANT LOCAL ARABICS of TUNISIA and MOROCCO is STRIKING here as a WHOLE SKETCH of CHAOS of INCOMPREHENSIBLE VERSIONS of ARABIC not being understood by NORTH AFRICAN ARABS.

In 2002 'AL LIMBY' was the BEGINNING of an EXTRAORDINARY MOVEMENT of 'SHA'ABI' [of the people] COMEDY FILMS that had a HIDDEN POLITICAL AGENDA behind the seemingly INNOCENT JOKEY FACADE. MOHAMED SA'AD' made a STREAM of these FILMS over the 2000s that, along with SERIOUS CINEMA outlining the CORRUPTION and OPPRESSION of EGYPTIANS by the REGIME, like 'WAHID-SIFR'[ONE-ZERO], AL AMARAAT YACOUBI [THE YACOUBIAN BUILDING] and these COMEDY and NON-COMEDY CINEMA transmitted the MESSAGE of REVOLUTION to BRING DOWN the REGIME of HOSNY MUBARAK. SISI has REBUILT the CHOKE-CHAIN of the REGIME on the EGYPTIAN PEOPLE again and has NEUTRALISED the EGYPTIAN CINEMA, seeing the POWER of SATIRICAL SHA'ABI and SERIOUS LIFE-DOCUMENTING ARABIC SCREEN. EGYPTIAN CINEMA is full of WESTERNISING CAPITALISTIC SECULAR MEANINGLESS the REVOLUTION comes again, which it will, judging by EGYPTIAN HISTORY.

The LIMBY CHARACTER is from the SLUMS of CAIRO. He is a PRODUCT of the MIGRATION from the COUNTRYSIDE of the POOR under the LAND REFORMS of SOCIALIST NASSER. Each person was given a piece of land. They all then sold it and came to the cities and found nothing for them and could not return to their villages and farms, so live in the slums of Cairo and other cities.

The COMEDY REVOLVES around LANGUAGE and CLASS. CLASS is very CONCERNING for EGYPTIAN SOCIETY. AL LIMBY shows and revels in the LOW CLASS or 'BI-A' ['environment'] type of person. MOHAMED SA'AD is a MASTER of TIMING and KNOWLEDGE of his COUNTRYMEN and their HUMOUR. It is said that MUCH of SA'AD'S ACTING is IMPROVISED LIVE on CAMERA and NOT SCRIPTED, or DIVERTS from the SCRIPT as AD-LIB. It is a RISKY PROCESS that he USES but this is also the FORMAT that BRITISH CINEMA DIRECTOR: MIKE LEIGH also uses for his ACTORS in BRITISH FILMS like 'SECRETS AND LIES' and 'ABIGAIL'S PARTY'. So MOHAMED SA'AD is using TECHNIQUES that are ATTEMPTED other places for the EFFECT of SPONTANEOUS HUMOUR that is ACCURATE and ALIVE for the EFFECT of AUTHENTIC REPLICATION of THE STREET.

AL LIMBY is TYPICALLY UNEDUCATED, yet, the SHA'ABI FILM HIDDEN AGENDA is an ENDING of LIMBY EDUCATING his CHILD and giving a SPEECH on the IMPORTANCE of EDUCATION which is TRANSMITTED, DRIPPING in COMEDY for an AUDIENCE in CLOSE ATTACHMENT with the SATIRE to TAKE THE MESSAGE IN. It was a NEW MESSAGE for EGYPTIAN CINEMA and DELIVERED via the TOOL that APPEALS to the MINDS of EGYPTIANS: LAUGHTER.

The LIMBY CHARACTER took the MIDDLE EAST by STORM. It is the HIGHEST GROSSING EGYPTIAN FILM EVER. Yet, it is LOW BUDGET and APPEARS to have been SEVERELY EDITED before RELEASE. The SHORTNESS of the FILM adds to its CHARM and FUN, plus RE-VIEWING. The FILM seems to have EVOLVED from LIMBY being a small character to a main role.

The ROLE of ABLA KAMIL as 'OUM LIMBY', 'MOTHER LIMBY' is HYSTERICAL PARODY of WOMEN of the 'SHA'AB'. KAMIL was INTERVIEWED on TELEVISION and asked HOW SHE CREATED the MOTHER CHARACTER so FUNNY. ABLA KAMIL said that she had SPENT a DAY on the MICRO BUSES going AROUND CAIRO. She had WATCHED the WOMEN like OUM LIMBY, how they do their SCARF, how they MOVE, how they SPEAK and then just EXAGGERATED them SLIGHTLY in the FILM.

The AL LIMBY FILM looks at the POOR and the DESPERATION of 'GET RICH QUICK SCHEMES'. There is VENTURING into the SLUM SOCIETY and the POLITICS of MARRIAGE [a person needs money for a flat and furniture before marriage is approved - many people getting married are in their 30s!]. The RICH and the POOR is DEMONSTRATED by the JETTISONING of the LIMBYS from a FIVE STAR HOTEL for being POOR and LOW CLASS.
